So the Transient Vacation Rentals are now a target for the powers that be. They do not like this very much! For the moment the powers that be are backing off so that they can pass laws to cover the problem they ran up against with selective enforcement. When the laws are in place the permit process will also be in place! That is not to far down the road. Just the recent fiasco of closing down a few Bed and Breakfasts has caused a major drop in the visitor count. Many visitors cannot afford expensive Hotels and Condos. Again, does our Government care? Update: The laws are in place now. The Hotels have succeeded in their plan to stop TVRs, weddings on the beach and a few other major activities that our visitors want. Believe it or not this whole thing is a conspiracy. The Hotel industry actually believed that if they shut down the TVRs and the Independent weddding businesses, they would reap the benefits. How wrong could they be. Anyone with an ounce of brains can see that the TVRs and the Wedding companies fill a niche. A niche that includes people that want to come to Hawaii but can not afford Hotel prices. What they seem to have overlooked is the fact that many wedding couples can not afford the price of their rooms or the price of their wedding grounds. However, many of their guests can. By eliminating this niche of visitors they have actually hurt their own business as well. Eventually they will see this. At least I hope they do, though it is probably too late to recover the reputation that Maui once had. |
